Edinburgh

Took the train up to Waverly station in Edinburgh. Had a few good days of sun before the rain and we took full advantage by taking a tour and hiking up Calton hill for the best views of the city! We stopped at a bunch of museums, including the National Museum of Scotland where we saw the real Dolly the sheep!

Inverness + Loch Ness/Alltsigh

Took a super rainy bus ride up to Inverness in the highlands. We ended up having an unplanned 2 hour layover at a bus stop in Perth due to all the flooding on the roads- it had apparently rained enough for the entire month in 2 minutes. We saw highway patrol trying to literally suck up some of the excess water, but it was all worth it for that first view of Loch Ness!

We did the Great Glen Way trail to Invermoriston, the closest town to our hostel, over a couple days and boy was it gorgeous! We got news of the Queen’s passing on the bus from Inverness to our hostel and the flags were all immediately at half mast- crazy that we were in the UK for such an historic moment.

Day 2 of the trail saw more of the fairytale woods along the way.. we were so happy when we finally made it to the little cafe in Invermoriston! One of the best (and freshest) meals we’ve had all trip!!

Back to Edinburgh

We headed back to Edinburgh for the night to catch a flight over to Belgium.. just in time for the Queen’s body to be arriving at St. Giles Cathedral to be viewed by the people. It was absolute mayhem on the Royal Mile- what seemed like all the policemen in Scotland, a ton of reporters, and hordes of people.
